As the Detroit Three struggle with the economy and seek a bailout, one car company is opening another car plant for business and turning it up a notch. Honda is opening another American plant.
In southeast Indiana, over a thousand workers are cheering the opening of a brand new automotive plant that should provide plenty of work for the region. It was a solid reminder that the automotive industry in America extends beyond the region of Detroit and most certainly extends beyond the traditional Big Detroit Three: Ford, General Motors, and Chrysler.
“Is this Civic an American-built automobile?” Greensburg Mayor Gary Herbert said as the plant displayed a brand new Honda Civic sedan. The crowd returned a cheer in the affirmative.
It is interesting to see the rise of such a plant in America’s farming heartland with other car companies struggling to maintain employees and keep businesses open. It seems that we are hearing abotu car factory layoffs each and every day amongst companies like GM or Ford. Buyouts of contracts and diminished schedules are certainly news items that are reported frequently.
But it seems that Honda is floating in the other direction. And while Honda is not necessarily changing the tide of the industry, their smart business moves and job opportunities are making several people very happy. From the plant in Indiana to the local Doylestown Honda dealer, business is good for the time being.
