Last year was an odd year for car sales. Rising gas prices made consumers think twice about the type of car they bought during the year. But your Allentown auto dealers want to discuss something else about car sales: Color.

In 2008, white was the most popular color for car buyers, according to DuPont Automotive Color Popularity Report. Last year was the second consecutive year that white was the most popular car color among buyers.

The study reasoned that white was so popular because of the “white effects” available with the color. For instance, you can get white with “pearl and iridescent finishes” that still appear white but they are a little different to distinguish the finish from a traditional white.

In addition to white, black and silver were also popular among buyers last year. While white and pearl accounted for a total of about 20 percent of the market, 17 percent of buyers bought black cars and cars with “black effects.” Silver alone accounted for about 17 percent of sales, knocking it out of the top spot after six consecutive years.

The National Safety Council (NSC) wants to persuade lawmakers to create laws against any type of cell phone usage while driving. Members of the group are contacting legislators and governors in all 50 states to accomplish the goal.

“Studies show that driving while talking on a cell phone is extremely dangerous and puts drivers at a four times greater risk of a crash,” said Janet Froetscher, the CEO of NSC. She compares talking on a cell phone to drunk driving, too. “When our friends have been drinking, we take the car keys away. It’s time to take the cell phone away.”

“If you have [a credit score of] 700 and above you don’t have a problem getting a loan. We’re seeing some great opportunities for people with excellent credit,” said one dealer in Kingwood, Texas. But, he also said anybody with a credit score of 650 or lower will likely have trouble getting approved.

Even with good credit, though, you could be facing higher interest rates than normal. For buyers with a score between 720 and 850, a 6.7 percent interest rate is fairly common, according to MyFico.com. Unfortunately, that means you’d be paying nearly $770 a month for financing a $25,000 car for three years.

Hyundai Automotive is always looking for ways to increase efficiency with every passing model year. This year is no different as Hyundai Automotive is introducing a new six-speed automatic gearbox. If you’re not car savvy, the more gears a car has, the more efficient it is.

Hyundai Automotive designed and manufactured the new gearbox for select 2009 models. While it’s not unheard of for a car manufacturer to design and produce their gearbox for installing in their products, it is rare. Only a couple other manufacturers have done this while the others typically buy ready-made gearboxes from specialist companies. In addition to having one more gear than the previous generation gearbox, the new system is “26 pounds lighter and uses 62 fewer parts.” It may in fact be the “lightest 6-speeder on the market,” as Hyundai claims.

But that’s not the best part. Engineers “in the know” say the new gearbox is going to increase fuel efficiency by about 12 percent. That’s good news since gas prices have started to inch back up in recent weeks!

The 2009 Hyundai Azera is going to be the first model to have the new gearbox installed. It will also be included on select 2009 models and vehicles thereafter.
