It seems as though many people are coming down on the auto industry because of all of its “evils.” However, where would this nation and this world be without that auto industry. The sales president of Toyota recently made a speech discussing the importance of automobiles in our society. Here are some of the highlights of that speech.
• The auto industry creates more jobs and more retail spending than any other industry in the world.
• Auto workers make a combined salary of about $335 billion each year.
• About 10 percent of the jobs in the United States can be attributed to the automobile industry.
• Toyota employs about 34,000 American workers and has a total investment of about $18.2 billion.
• About 25 percent of auto owners name their vehicles.
• The automobile is “one of the most liberating inventions of all time.”
• More hybrids are sold in San Francisco than in any other part of the world. That’s why the city has been dubbed “The Hybrid Capital of the World.” Three of the top ten Prius dealers in the world are based in San Francisco and consumers in the city account for about 10 percent of all hybrid car sales.
