New Honda Car Makes Fuel Cell Tech A Reality

Honda Cars

The future of fuel economy has arrived at Honda Motors. Honda has just announced that they have begun production of the FCX Clarity. The FCX clarity is the very first mass produced hydrogen-based fuel cell vehicle.

Over the next three years, Honda will produce just 200 of these vehicles. Honda is ready to begin producing the FCX Clarity in mass volumes, and intends to do so as hydrogen filling stations become more and more common. Honda is ready to mass produce these vehicles, and is waiting on the fuel supply infrastructure to catch up.

At this point, fuel cell powered vehicles are a very real option. Honda believes that, once a few of these vehicles get on the road, they will grow in popularity thereby creating a demand for fuel cell fueling stations.

Once rejected as too exotic and expensive to use, fuel cell vehicles like the FCX Clarity represent the future of the automotive industry. According to Honda’s president, Takeo Fukai, Honda will "work hard to mainstream fuel cell cars."

Honda Cars have long been known for their fuel economy. The FCX Clarity gets the equivalent of 74 miles per gallon of gasoline. This makes fuel cell technology an attractive option, especially in the day of rising oil and gas prices.

This amazing fuel economy comes at a price, however. Each of these vehicles costs several hundred thousand dollars just to make. While Mr. Fukai said that he suspects this cost of production will drop below $100,000 within a few years, it’s still a hefty price tag for most folks.

Honda’s answer has been to lease the FCX Clarity. Honda will lease these vehicles for around $600 per month, which is about how much a lease on a luxury vehicle runs today.
