These are not just any flowers, though. The flowers measure 18 feet high and they have solar cells built into their petals and their base to provide power to passersby who need to charge a cell phone or laptop computer. They also provide a Wi-Fi network so people can use their laptops to get online for free.

The theme for the project designed to promote these hybrid Toyota cars is “Harmony Between Man, Nature and Machine.” The flowers relate to the 2010 Prius in that these new Toyota cars have a solar-powered ventilation system that helps keep the car cool and ventilated even when parked in the sun.

The base of these plastic flowers can seat up to 10 people and they will be around Manhattan until August 2. From there, the project moves to Chicago, Seattle, San Francisco and Los Angeles. It’s a great way to bring attention to a brand of Toyota cars that continues to lead the industry in hybrid sales and innovation.
