Despite recent sales slumps for most of the world’s most popular automakers, the various certified use car programs have been a “bright spot,” according to this article in the Washington Times.
Sales of new cars across the board in the industry have fallen off with only a few exceptions. However, certified pre-owned (CPO) sales “are enjoying surging popularity, for the simple reason that they just may be the best value at a dealership.” In addition, sales of CPOs have increased each year for the last 10 years, showing that their popularity probably is not going to slow down any time soon.
Certified used cars go through at least a 100-point checklist that ranges from the car’s history to its engine, tires, mileage and just about anything else you can think of. When they get the “certified” label, the cars also receive a warranty backed by the manufacturer. Most warranties are rather extensive and often include roadside assistance and other perks.
Dealers also appreciate the CPO program. It helps them build customer loyalty to the brand that they sell. When a customer buys a certified used car from one dealer, they are likely to return to that dealer when they are in the market for a new or even used car.
