Toyota Focusing on Hybrids for US Market

hybrid carsThere was a time when Toyota was a leader in high-performance sports cars. Models like the Supra and other high-horsepower vehicles screamed the name “Toyota” as they whizzed by you on the streets. But due to customer demands and environmental issues, those days are far behind us.

Since 2002, Toyota has been focusing the majority of its efforts on greener cars. Today, the automaker’s North American operations are putting even more emphasis on more efficient cars and putting plans for sports cars with high-performance engines on the back burner.

“It’s just a re-prioritization of where we think the customer is today and where the customer is going to be 24 and 36 months from now,” explained Bob Carter, the Toyota Division general manager, in an interview with Automotive News. According to him, sports cars are not even on the agenda for Toyota at this time. They just do not make much business sense during a time when the eco-friendly craze has taken over and sports car drivers get dirty looks from hybrid drivers at red lights and stop signs.
